Department of Literary Cultures and Language

The Department of English is the focal point of studying language and literature in a context of overlapping diasporas and multilingual traditions. Research and teaching include historical and analytical approaches to language and rhetoric, academic and creative modes of writing, literary theory, and a wide range of literary texts as well as visual and cultural practices.

​​​​​​​​The Department of English offers B.A. degree programs in Language and Literature, and minors in four areas: Language, Literature, Creative Writing, and Gender Studies. In addition, it offers three Minors in collaboration with other departments and programs at AUB: a Minor in Translation with the Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages, a Minor in Theater with the Department of Fine Arts and Art History and the Civilization Studies Program, and a Minor in Film and Visual Culture with the Media Studies Program of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Media Studies. 
At the graduate level, the Department offers MA degrees in Language and i​n Literature. The Department of English features a wide array of courses, which include courses in literature (English, American, and comparative/world literature), language, rhetoric and composition, creative writing, translation, theater, film and visual culture, gender and women’s studies, digital humanities, in addition to courses in academic ​writing offered by the Communication Skills Program. ​​
